Fire Department

SERVICES PROVIDED

Response to emergencies such as:
  • Structure Fires
  • Gas/Brush Fires
  • Fire Alarms
  • MVA’s requiring Extrication (Jaws of Life)
  • Hazardous materials response (Awareness level)
  • Public service calls
Public Education
  • Firehall tours for a wide variety of groups
  • Daycare fire safety programs
  • School fire safety programs
  • Fire safety for Older Adults
  • Workshops for Service groups, Businesses and Industry
  • Special events Fire Prevention week and Burn awareness week
  • FireSmart Program
Premise Inspection
  • All commercial, multi family residential, industrial and assembly occupancies are inspected a minimum of annually to insure that fire life and safety issues adhere to the applicable codes (National Fire Code of Canada, BC Building Code and NFPA.)
  • We conduct approximately 600 property inspections annually.
  • A Fire inspection is required for all businesses requesting a business license.
Rescue / Vehicle Extrication
  • We are equipped with a complete line of Hurst extrication equipment (Jaws of Life).
  • We perform low angle embankment rescue.
Training
  • 3 hours of training on Wednesday evenings takes place for paid on call members.
  • Currently 21 members are enrolled in the Fire Fighter I & II certification program from the Justice Institute of British Columbia.
  • Several Fire Fighters hold certification in the following:
    • First Aid
    • Live Fire I & II
    • Hazmat awareness
    • Pumps and pumping
    • Fire service instructor
    • Fire safety officer
    • Incident Command Training
    • Confined Space Rescue
    • High Angle / Embankment Rescue
Association of Summerland Firefighters
  • In 2009 the Association of Summerland Firefighters either directly funded and or assisted in the fundraising of several events.  Total money contributed through either fundraising or direct donation was in excess of $22,000.
  • Various donation amounts were awarded to the following:
    • Sponsorship of a Blossom Queen Candidate
    • Sponsorship of a Minor Baseball team
    • Dry Grad Christmas Tree Pick up
    • Awarded two bursaries to graduating SSS students
    • Contribution in memory of Carol Trotter
    • Fundraised for the annual Toys for Tots and Teens Campaign
    • Held a car wash and BBQ to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society
    • Took part in and raised money for Cancer Society Relay for Life
    • Annual 911 Dance fundraiser, donations made to various organizations
    • Recently committed to assisting in funding the KidSport program
