Recyclable Materials Accepted at the Landfill

In order to increase recycling opportunities and to reduce Landfill costs, the District of Summerland is mandating the separation of certain wastes from the general waste stream. By banning mixed loads, and separating out those items that can be recycled, we will reduce the volume of materials being placed in the Landfill.  The following recyclable materials can be placed in the Landfill at NO CHARGE when separated and placed in the correct location:

  • Appliances with Freon and other Consumer Appliances (washers and dryers, dishwashers, stoves, hot water tanks, and refrigeration units)

  • Electronic Waste (computers and accessories) although TVs and stereo equipment are not recyclable at the Landfill and are considered household garbage. TVs are accepted for recycling at J&C Bottling Depot in Penticton at 200 Rosetown Ave, 492-5144.

  • Propane Tanks and Batteries

  • Clean Scrap Metal (sheet metal, siding, roofing, rebar, flashing pipes, window frames, doors, furnaces, duct work, wire cable, bath tubs, fencing, bicycle frames, automotive body parts, machinery, metal furniture, tire rims, etc)

  • Separated Yard and Wood Waste - first 500 kg is free (clean organic materials such as lumber, branches, plywood, particle board, tree stumps, prunings, grass, flowers, leaves, etc which are free of non-wood materials such as creosote, rocks, metal, heavy coats of paint, wire, fiberglass, asphalt roofing materials, and other materials)

  • Oil, oil containers and oil filters can be dropped off at the Landfill Oil Drop Off Site to be recycled by BC Used Oil. This is not for commercial sellers.

There are bins at the landfill also for glass (not recyclable at this time), residential blue bags and cardboard.

A penalty of double the applicable tipping charge will be imposed on loads that contain more than 1% recyclable or compostable materials.
